Eugene Jacques Bullard

Max Brooks’ Harlem Hellfighters graphic novel reminds me that one of the first black pilots, Eugene Jacques Bullard, flew for the French because Americans disallowed black pilots until WWII. He was known as “L’Hirondelle noire,” or “Black Swallow.” He was awarded the Criox de guerre in both world wars.
